It’s Thursday night, June 10, Jonathan is in bed and I’m flipping on the DVR to see what we have recorded. Karen is on the other couch browsing the Internet on the iPad. She looks up excited and says, “Honey, want to go on vacation?” I’m sure you know what that means. We had been looking at a friend’s family condo, but the summer prices were out of our budget. She looked them up online again and they were running a last minute deal if we went on Saturday. So, after a couple of calls we found ourselves having to get ready to leave Saturday morning.
So, it’s Saturday morning and we’re on our way. So, which way will we go … the highway … or back roads? Well, we tried back roads first of all and needless to say we took the interstate coming back. There is just something about the first day of traveling that tests a marriage. Well, we finally made it to our destination – Hilton Head Island. We checked in and were very eager to enjoy our new condo for the week. Unfortunately, the lock was broken and we had to wait for a locksmith to get it open for us. We had planned on a pool or ocean visit, but after the locksmith left all we had time for was a frozen pizza and to put Jonathan to bed. Oh yeah, afterward, we found out that my swimsuit was not packed. So, at 8:00 PM I headed out to Target to get a swimsuit and peanut M&M’s for the lady of the house. I arrived back at the condo at 9:00 PM, sat on the couch with my precious wife and said, “How about we start our vacation tomorrow?”
Now that our vacation had begun, there remained one question to be answered, Could we make it the whole week and not get burned?. With Jonathan’s help, we did it very successfully! You see Jonathan is very much a schedule boy, he has become accustomed to routine and we didn’t break from it on vacation (at least not too much). This was our routine (our recipe for happiness and a burn free vacation):
8:00 AM – Jonathan wakes up and Daddy makes breakfast for the fam.
9:00 AM – 11:00 AM – Get greased up and head to the beach – sunblock, hats, shirts, sunglasses, toys, umbrella, snacks, beach bag, and chairs. Whew!
11:30 AM – Degrease with showers and Momma makes lunch for the fam.
Noon – Nap until 3 or 4 (if we’re lucky) – (Of course, Daddy used this time to make sure his company was still operating, then I joined the fam for a nap). Jonathan inherited his Momma’s passion for napping. Totally a Telander trait!
5:00 PM – Daddy and Momma make dinner.
6:00 PM – 7:30 PM – Head back out to the beach for a beautiful sunset and empty beach for Jonathan to run and play in the water.
8:00 PM – Shower (once again) and put Jonathan to bed.
This was pretty much our days at Hilton Head give or take a short nap by Jonathan, a trip to Harbor Town in 100 degree sun to buy T-Shirts, a trip back to Harbor Town to return a T-Shirt, a night out at Fuddruckers (Yum!), and a few trips to Sam’s and Publix for groceries.
We also happened to be at the beach at the same time as our friend, Jamie, her mom and her daughter. It was so much fun to spend some time with them and to see our kids play together! Jamie’s mom was kind enough to pick up sand buckets and seashells for the kids so that they could have a seashell hunt on the beach. The kids loved it!
Overall, We had an absolutely fabulous trip! As I write this, I long to be there once again. Perhaps, next year once our new baby boy gets here.
Of course, you know I got a video of the highlights. I ended up with about 50 minutes of video. After hours of editing, I was able to get it down to 3:23 just enough for a song. Below is the video set to “Get Back Up” by Toby Mac. You will see why this is such an appropriate song – just count how many times Jonathan falls down – too many! It’s lots of fun! Enjoy!
